The Motor City book

A Visual Journey into the History of Detroit
by Franziska Jähnke, Dörte Wächter & Ralf Herrmann

Detroit – city of extremes. A third of the city lies derelict, and many buildings have been or are about to be torn down. But at the beginning of the 20th century Detroit was the boomtown of North America, representing the birthplace and the centre of the American car industry.
The graphic designers Franziska Jähnke, Dörte Wächter and Ralf Herrmann spent several months in Detroit collecting stories, pictures and collectibles like car emblems. With this book—currently only available in a German edition—they tell the stories of Cadillac, Pontiac, Chevrolet, Ford and all the other famous people in Detroit’s history. The book uses two new script typefaces which were directly inspired by the car emblems of the Motor City. More information about the development of these typefaces and the book can be found in this article.
